Barry Sholem

Barry Sholem is Founder and Chairman of MSD Real Estate.  He served as Head of Real Estate since its inception in 2004 when he joined MSD Capital as a Partner.  Under his 16 years of leadership, the group has grown from his first acquisition of the Four Seasons Resort Maui to today’s multi-billion-dollar portfolio of hotels, apartment buildings and office buildings across the U.S.  Prior to joining MSD, Barry served from 1994-2004 as Founder and Chairman of DLJ Real Estate Capital Partners (DLJRECP), a series of multi-billion-dollar real estate private equity funds with investments across the U.S., Europe and Barry had responsibility for directing overall investment strategy of the funds and overseeing the day-to-day activities of its investment professionals.  Prior to that, Barry worked at Goldman Sachs where he worked in New York, London, Tokyo and Los Angeles and ultimately led the Real Estate Principal Investment Area and Real Estate Investment Banking on the West Coast.  While there, he had national responsibility for real estate-related entity-level investments and acquisitions in the hospitality industry.

Barry currently resides in Santa Monica, CA but is very proud of his Midwestern roots in Central Illinois.  Raised in Champaign, the home of the University of Illinois, he remains a die-hard Illini and loyal supporter of all Illinois sports.

Barry and his wife, Frankie, are also active supporters of his alma mater, Brown University, where they have endowed numerous financial aid scholarships and where Barry is a member of the President’s Leadership Council.  Barry has also sat on the boards of several public companies including Developers Diversified, Site Centers and Retail Value Investors (RVI) and he is a past Trustee of Brentwood School in Los Angeles.  Barry is also a member of the Urban Land Institute, the Real Estate Roundtable and the UC Berkeley Real Estate Advisory Board.

Barry received an M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management and a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Brown University.
